New Jersey Electric Rates vs Solar: By The Numbers
New Jersey electric rates are rising faster than rent in Hoboken, with rates set for a drastic increase (20% or more!) in June 2025. This will be an additional uptick on top of the 23% rates have already increased in the last 5 years.
But don’t worry, New Jersey—solar power makes it easy to escape high electric rates and take control of what you pay for energy.

New Jersey
Solar Incentives and Rebates
The garden state has some of the best solar incentives and state-funded programs around.
30% Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
You can get a tax credit worth 30% of your total solar system cost. This credit lowers the upfront cost of owning solar panels and is also helping to reduce monthly payments for those who lease. To take full advantage of the credit with ownership, you’ll need to have enough federal tax liability.
If you’re not sure you qualify, we’ll walk you through other ways to make solar work for your budget.
Successor Solar Incentive Program (SuSI)
When you go solar in New Jersey, you don’t just save on your electric bill — you can also get paid for the energy your system produces.
Through the SuSI, homeowners earn a certificate for every 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) their solar panels generate. These certificates, called SREC-IIs, are worth $85 each and can be sold for cash, providing a reliable source of extra income for 15 years after install.
Sales and Use Tax Exemption for PV and Geothermal Systems
Homeowners in New Jersey don’t have to pay the state’s 6.625% sales tax on solar systems, which means you save right away with no added cost for sales tax on your installation.
Property Tax Exemption for Renewable Energy Systems
Solar panels increase your home’s value, but in New Jersey, they won’t increase your property taxes. The added value from your solar system is completely exempt from property tax, so you benefit without paying more.
New Jersey Net Energy Metering
In New Jersey, when your solar panels generate more energy than you use, you earn a credit on your utility bill. You can use that credit later when your system isn’t producing as much, helping to power your home without needing to install batteries.
How to Claim the NJ Solar Energy Incentives
We take care of everything aside from filing your taxes for you next year. While you should certainly consult a tax professional, we always make sure our customers are taking full advantage of any federal and state solar incentives. This includes providing alternative options such as leasing or power purchase agreements in the event that you don’t qualify for the incentives.

Steven Is. SaldarriagaNovember 15, 2024 Very helpful Cameron was there to answer all my questions my system is not working yet but I'm happy with all the work is done so far David FedericoNovember 15, 2024 Evergreen and its staff were true professionals throughout the whole process. I met with 6 different solar companies. Evergreen was the first I sat down with and the leader throughout the entire process. I knew nothing about solar prior to meeting with them, and after our 45 minute meeting I was thoroughly informed about all aspects, details, numbers, and the expected timeline. No pushy sales tactics, and the numbers they initially shared with me were the best out of the six companies I interviewed. The project manager and installation company updated us every step of the way, and were a pleasure to work with. I would highly recommend Evergreen. Teddy PanoutsakopoulosNovember 15, 2024 Great Company hands down! Prior to going with this company I also did a lot of research and sat down with 2 other companies, before choosing Evergreen Solar. My sales person Isaiah Hernandez was top notch. He was very knowledgeable, kind, and courteous. My Fiancé and I had multiple questions and he had a prompt answer to all of them. Seamless install from the beginning to the end. Had my solar installed 2 months ago and still to this day if I have and concerns or questions Isaiah Hernandez (sales person) personal phone number he answers for me in minutes. He patiently waited for my wife and repeated the presentation. We agreed that purchasing was the best option for us. We are extremely happy with the service we received before, during and after the install. The installers were quick, neat and extremely polite. We really didn’t have much to do. Thank you so much for this experience, you have a star product and an amazing salesman in Law, he is the BEST!!! Christopher BrownNovember 12, 2024 Great experience. Can you get free solar panels in New Jersey?
While you can’t technically get “free” solar panels anywhere, they are “free” in the sense that you can expect to pay less for solar than you already do for electricity — and it costs nothing to make the switch.
So you’re swapping out an unpredictable and constantly increasing electric bill for a price protected solar payment that is usually about 40% lower. While it isn’t exactly “free”, it’s about as close as it gets.
