New Jersey Solar Incentives and Rebates

Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
With the enactment of the “Big Beautiful Bill” on July 4, 2025, the solar tax credit has changed. Now, instead of homeowners having to qualify for and claim the federal tax credit themselves, the savings are automatically applied through solar leases and power purchase agreements (PPAs). This means everyone can benefit from the value of the credit without extra steps or stipulations — the savings are built right into your plan. The result is lower monthly payments and a more affordable way to enjoy clean, reliable solar energy.
Successor Solar Incentive Program (SuSI)
When you go solar in New Jersey, you don’t just save on your electric bill — you can also get paid for the energy your system produces. Through the SuSI, homeowners earn one certificate for every 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) their solar panels generate. These certificates, called SREC-IIs, are worth $85 each and can be sold for cash, providing a reliable source of extra income for 15 years after install.
Energy Community Tax Credit Bonus
Certain parts of New Jersey are in special energy communities which qualify for an additional 10% tax credit bonus. These areas typically were invested in fossil fuels, and are now heavily incentivized to move towards a clean energy future with solar.
Property Tax Exemption for Renewable Energy Systems
Solar panels increase your home’s value, but in New Jersey, they won’t increase your property taxes. The added value from your solar system is completely exempt from property tax, so you benefit without paying more.
Home Solar System Sales Tax Exemption
Homeowners in New Jersey don’t have to pay the state’s 6.625% sales tax on solar systems, which means you save right away with no added cost for sales tax on your installation.
New Jersey Net Energy Metering
In New Jersey, when your solar panels generate more energy than you use, you earn a credit on your utility bill. You can use that credit later when your system isn’t producing as much, helping to power your home without needing to install batteries.
