New Jersey Electric Rates vs Solar: By The Numbers
New Jersey electric rates are rising faster than rent in Hoboken, with rates seeing a drastic increase (20% immediate spike!) in June 2025. This is an additional uptick on top of the 24% rates have already increased in the last 5 years.

New Jersey Solar Incentives and Rebates
The garden state has some of the best solar incentives and state-funded programs around.
Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
Leased and PPA systems qualify for the 30% federal investment tax credit, and that value comes to you as a lower lease payment or power rate, often a better deal than buying. There is no tax form to file and no tax liability needed on your end. To qualify, systems that begin construction after July 4, 2026 must be up and running by December 31, 2027, so timing matters.
If you buy your system with cash or a loan, your savings come from your electric bill and the state programs below. The homeowner version of the federal credit applied to systems installed through December 31, 2025.

Successor Solar Incentive Program (SuSI)
When you go solar in New Jersey, you don’t just save on your electric bill — you can also get paid for the energy your system produces. Through the SuSI, homeowners earn one certificate for every 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) their solar panels generate. These certificates, called SREC-IIs, earn a fixed value for 15 years after install. For home systems registered on or after July 27, 2026, each one is worth $77 (it was $85 before that date), giving you a reliable source of extra income on top of your bill savings.
Energy Community Bonus (Leases and PPAs)
Parts of New Jersey are federal energy communities: areas tied to fossil fuel jobs or closed coal plants. In 2026 that includes Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Gloucester and Salem counties, plus parts of Mercer and Warren counties.
A leased or PPA system in an energy community qualifies for a 10-percentage-point bonus on the federal credit, which can mean an even lower price for you. It applies to leases and PPAs, not to systems you buy. Check your ZIP code.
Property Tax Exemption for Renewable Energy Systems
Solar panels increase your home’s value, but in New Jersey, they won’t increase your property taxes. The added value from your solar system is completely exempt from property tax, so you benefit without paying more.
Home Solar System Sales Tax Exemption
Homeowners in New Jersey don’t have to pay the state’s 6.625% sales tax on solar systems, which means you save right away with no added cost for sales tax on your installation.
New Jersey Net Energy Metering
In New Jersey, when your solar panels generate more energy than you use, you earn a credit on your utility bill. You can use that credit later when your system isn’t producing as much, helping to power your home without needing to install batteries.
