What Solar Fit shows you
- A fit rating for your roof, based on its usable sun hours, direction and shade.
- A panel layout on the roof faces that get the most sun, and how many panels fit.
- System size and yearly production, sized from your monthly electric bill, and how much of your usage it could cover.
- A sun map of your roof, so you can see where the shade falls.
What makes a roof a good fit
In New England, south-, east- and west-facing roofs all produce well; north-facing faces usually don't. Shade matters more than direction: a few tall trees can cut a roof's output more than a less-than-ideal angle. Roof age matters too, since panels stay up for decades. After your report
The report ends with a calendar to book a call with a solar advisor. They confirm the design, check your roof and electrical panel, and price every way to pay side by side. To compare those options first, read our guide to solar financing.
Frequently asked questions
How does Solar Fit check my roof?
It uses Google's Solar API, which models your roof from aerial imagery and 3D data: each roof face's angle and direction, the shade from trees and nearby buildings, and the hours of usable sun across a year. We combine that with your monthly electric bill to size a system and lay out panels on the roof faces that get the most sun.
Why do you ask for my phone number?
Your full report, with the panel layout, sun map and sizing, is personal to your address, so we text a code to confirm it's you before showing it. The same number lets one of our solar advisors follow up if you'd like a final design and pricing.
Is the Solar Fit result a quote?
No. It's a preliminary design to show whether your roof suits solar and roughly what size system fits your usage. A final design confirms the roof's condition, your electrical panel and the exact layout, and comes with pricing for every way to pay: cash, loan, lease, PPA or prepaid PPA.
What if my roof isn't a good fit?
Shade, a small or north-facing roof, or a roof near the end of its life can limit solar. If your roof needs replacing, our solar + roof program includes a new roof with your solar installation at a reduced price, and the total package often costs less than your current electric bill.
Solar Fit is a free planning tool. Results are estimates from satellite data and your bill, not a quote or a guarantee of production.
